Virginia State University was host to the 3rd Annual USDA Outreach Conference recently held as part of the agency’s effort to help educate agricultural producers on the programs and activities available from USDA. More than 300 people attended the event that featured Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan as the keynote speaker. Merrigan presented the “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative followed by a panel of producers who shared the successes they have had in using USDA programs.

Breakout sessions gave producers the opportunity to learn more about cold storage opportunities, hoop houses and selling produce locally.
“We had a great opportunity to meet with producers both one-on-one and through several break out sessions. There was a lot of interest in FSA programs.” said Michael Wooden, state executive director, Virginia Farm Service Agency.
