Cow manure and fertilizer runoff have contributed to high levels of E.coli and blue-green algae in Vermont’s waterways, according to scientist. But several producers are playing a role in keeping the state’s water safe. Through the Farm Service Agency’s Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, known as CREP, more than 2,500 acres of buffer zone along Vermont’s waterways and more than $10 million in federal funding has been used to help farmers reduce waste runoff and sedimentation into local waterways.
